The Central Minnesota Woodworker's Association is a group of men and women from around the St. Cloud Minnesota area who share a common interest in the art and business of woodworking. We meet monthly in St. Cloud to share information, techniques and topics of interest in the area of woodworking. Learn more about membership or support.

September CMWA 2018

Wednesday September 19th, 2018 at 6:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on September 19th at 6pm. This month we will be taking a tour of Herbst Lumber Company in Milaca. Our plan is that we will meet at the Tech Center site at 6pm (one hour earlier than normal) and then carpool from there. It should be a lot of fun to see what they do there!

August CMWA 2018

Wednesday August 15th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on August 15th at 7pm. Rollie Johnson and Mark Voigt will be presenting a Router Workshop. The router is a very versatile tool, you can start by using it for basic things like adding round-overs or chamfers to your newly created project. Another handy thing to use it for is copying a pattern; with a flush trim bit and a template you can quickly create duplicates of your pattern. A third way you can use it is for making mortices, then all you need to do is clean up the corners with a chisel and it is ready for its tenon. In my opinion the router is a key tool to have in a woodworking shop.

July CMWA Picnic

Wednesday July 18th, 2018 at 6:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

I hope many of you can make it to our Annual Picnic! It will be held on July 18th at the Tech Center. We will be starting about an hour earlier; the grill will be hot by 6:00pm and the CMWA will be providing brats, hamburgers, and water. It is also a potluck so please bring something to share! Also, feel free to bring a significant other along or a friend. We are also sending out postcards to many of our past members. Hopefully we can have a big crowd and a fun time!

June CMWA Meeting

Wednesday June 20th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our monthly meeting will held on June 20th and Rollie Johnson will be doing a presentation of Hammer Veneering. I do not have any experience with this technique but I am excited to learn how it is done. Knowing Rollie, I am sure there will be some liquid hide glue involved! I have not used that glue yet either but there are quite a few benefits to it and Rollie will be more than willing to share. If you have a little something you recently made, please bring it in and tell us about it. We all can learn from each other and having a good conversation starter really spurs quite a bit of interest. You will also get some bragging rights and will be featured in our Made by Members section of our newsletter.

May CMWA Meeting

Wednesday May 16th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

At our monthly meeting, Rollie Johnson and Jim Preusser will be presenting the topic of Brace and Bit. I am sure all of us have an old brace hanging up on the wall of our shop as a decoration but did you know that you can actually use it? Tim Dubois and I were “educated” on its use by Mike Siemsen at the Lie Neilson Hand Tool Event earlier this spring when we built a Moxon style vice that can be clamped onto a workbench. There is a little bit of a trick in using a brace but once you figure it out it’s a handy tool to keep around.
If you have a little something you recently made, please bring it in and tell us about it. We all can learn from each other and having a good conversation starter really spurs quite a bit of interest.

April CMWA Meeting

Wednesday April 18th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

At our April meeting, Charlie Meyer will be presenting the topic Fast Fabulous Finish for Fine Furniture. I am sure we all have experienced completing a project only to dread the next step—finishing. It can be a challenge to get it right especially when you start to brush it on and it shows every glue squeeze out or the wonderful swirls of the random orbit sander. Not to mention when it is all done and it just doesn’t look as good as you pictured. It will be intriguing to learn Charlies take on this topic.

March CMWA Meeting

Wednesday March 21st, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

As we come to March it brings us even closer to the busyness of summer. But there is still time to
learn a bit about woodworking. Whether you are a professional or just starting out this month’s topic will have something for everyone. Mark Voight will be presenting Basic Woodworking on the 21st. This meeting will be a bit of a high level overview of the paid three evening course he is teaching, but still show many of the basic things you need to know in woodworking.

February CMWA Meeting

Wednesday February 21st, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on February 21. Don Peterson and Tim DuBois will be teaming up to give a presentation on the basics of hand tools. With power tools so readily available the art of hand work kind of slips away, but hand tools do have a lot of value to keep in our shops.

January CMWA Meeting

Wednesday January 17th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on January 17th and we will be getting a presentation from Michael Lauer on Leaded Glass. It will be fun to learn about and hopefully apply onto some of our future projects. When we can combine our different crafts together it opens up our minds for many different opportunities for design. Sometimes all we need is a little bit of inspiration.

December CMWA Meeting

Wednesday December 20th, 2017 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on December 20th at 7:00pm and we will be celebrating the end of the year with a potluck party. Everyone and their significant other is invited to the fun. Please bring a dish to share, there will be plenty of power so we can have lots of crock pots. I know I will be bringing a crock pot of chili cheese dip. We will also be having a silent auction where the proceeds will be going towards the CMWA to help fund future events, hands on activities, and new tools for the shop. If you would like to help out please bring along items that you would like to sell - they can be any shop related items or even wood.
