June CMWA Meeting

Wednesday June 19th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

This month Don Peterson will be giving a presentation on how to make a drawer. We will be starting the meeting off by going through different joints that one can use to connect two boards together at 90 degrees. Then we will move into a hands on challenge; we are going to have several tables set up and we will be trying to hand cut dovetails. This will be a great experience for all of us and I am sure that we will learn some techniques that we can apply in our own shop.

May CMWA Meeting

Wednesday May 15th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our next meeting will be held on May 15th at 7pm. This month Charlie Gunderson and Don Wade will be giving a presentation on Four Square Lumber and Glue Up, Biscuit Joints and Domino Joints. Many of the projects that we do in our shops require us to start with four square lumber and sometimes that can be a challenge to even know where to start. First we will start with a rough board by explaining the different ways that wood moves (bow, cup, crook, twist, or checking) and then we will follow that with the different tools in the shop that will help us achieve a perfectly straight and square board. Finally we will go through some different techniques for panel glue up. I hope you all can make it out to this meeting. I am sure there are many things we can learn as either a beginner or an experienced woodworker from this presentation!

April CMWA Meeting

Wednesday April 17th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

This month Tim Ziegler will be giving us a presentation on buying lumber. Some of the concepts that he will cover are sheet goods vs. board lumber and the different grades of wood and how the grading process works. He will also cover the many different acronyms used in the lumber industry; these can be confusing at times! Tim will also provide other insights and tips that will be helpful to us when we are buying lumber. I hope you all can make it out to this meeting. I am sure there are many things we can learn as either a beginner or an experienced woodworker from this presentation!

March CMWA Meeting

Wednesday March 20th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our March meeting will be held on March 20th at 7pm, and Rollie Johnson will be presenting the third installment of our Monthly Project Series called The Cut List. This is the second part in creating a well-defined plan for our projects. Rollie will be going over effective ways of making a good cut list and helping us get a better understanding of how important material selection is. Although this may seem like a relatively simple concept, it can get pretty complex without a good strategy to tackle it.

February CMWA Meeting

Wednesday February 27th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Due to weather, the February meeting has been rescheduled to February 27th. Rollie Johnson, Mark Voigt, and Devin Middendorf will be presenting the second installment of our Monthly Project Series called The Plan. Starting off with a well-defined plan will greatly increase the odds of success on your next project! We will be covering the basics of design: proportions and balance. Then we will move into different methods of creating a set of plans, from hand drawing to CAD. Finally, we will cover how drawings help you create a materials list and save time by problem solving before anything is cut.

If you have a little something you recently made, please bring it in and tell us about it. We can all learn from each other and having a good conversation starter really spurs quite a bit of interest. You will also get some bragging rights and will be featured in our Made by Members section of our newsletter.

January CMWA Meeting

Wednesday January 16th, 2019 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Kurt Zniewski and Shawn Jarvis we will be kicking off our Monthly Project Series with the first installment called The Start. Here is a brief look into what it will be about: Starting a new project is always exciting but the anticipation of the completed project can sometimes obscure the efforts needed to make the project a reality. In this first-of-a-series seminar we will discuss the joys and pitfalls of creating the most basic of furniture forms: the box. Almost all of the furniture we build relies on basic boxes to create volume, strength and utility, but even a basic box can be a frustrating challenge if a person is not prepared for the demands of the project. Let’s look at what decisions we need to make before we start down the project trail.

November CMWA Meeting (NEW DATE)

Wednesday November 28th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Paramount Tech Center, Waite Park

Our November meeting will be held a week later than normal, November 28th at 7pm. Don Peterson and Mark Voight will be doing a presentation on safety. Since last year we did safety on individual tools in the shop. This year we are going to change it up a bit and do a training on what to do in an accident situation. We thought this would be helpful because now we are doing more hands on activities at the Tech Center. An accident can happen at any time and we need to be prepared for it.
